Last Day in Wyoming

Our two REI tents, sleeping pads and sleeping bags have served us well over the past week, but in no way compare to the good night's sleep that comes from a real bed set up.  A big thanks to the Glaspey family for hosting us at their ranch in Wyoming and treating us to a world class fireworks show and local Hawaiian and BBQ pizza.  It is beautiful out here and the company and fellowship has been such a treat.

I (Hannah) am posting this update while the rest of our crew is watching the world cup finals at a local sports bar.  After the game is over we head down to Flaming Gorge and then on to Zion.

Since our internet access has not been great the past few days and there is no telling if we'll have cell or internet access at the next few stops, I thought I'd take this time to post some pictures to recap where we've been so far.

Blessings to you all!

Yellowstone Recap

Hello from Wyoming!

First off, we apologize for our limited postings.  While our nation’s national parks are set apart for their beauty, they are also black holes for cell phone and internet access (which at times has been an unanticipated vacation of its own).

After we left Craters of the Moon we made our way to Yellowstone National Park – along with the rest of America.  A few hours, a few full campsites, and a lot of raindrops later we set up our home for the next four nights in the Indian Creek Campground.   Indian Creek turned out to be a wonderful and very peaceful place to spend the next few nights.

Our four days in Yellowstone were filled to the brim with geyser watching, trail hiking, photo snapping, animal spotting, and soaking in the wonder of God’s handiwork and ingenuity.   What an awesome God we have who breaths life out of destruction and shows Himself through His creation.

Wednesday was by far our best day for wildlife.  On our way to Yellowstone lake we caught a glimpse of a bald eagle soaring overhead, and pulled over not once, but two times to watch two different bear cubs on the side of the road.  In Hayden Valley we were touring the thermal features only to find ourselves less than five feet away from a Bison who was unabashedly relieving himself next to the tourist boardwalk.  Looking a Bison in the eye that way can definitely speed up your heart rate!

Each day so far has presented an “unexpected party” as we like to call those unanticipated adventures we find ourselves in for one reason or another as we travel.

We can’t wait to share more with you when we return! We will try to post photos when we can - the internet we have managed to find is not very fast :)

4th of July

Day three of our trip lands on the fourth day of July.

In our search for dry ice we found an almost too perfect town, Haliey, Idaho.

We rolled into town just in time for families to roll their coolers, wagons, and BBQ's down the street in preparation for what has to be an annual parade. There really aren't words for places like this. Picture Middle-American come mountain-town.

Our journey from Tahoe to Crater's of the Moon in Idaho was a quick 6 stop, 12 hour jaunt bisecting the Silver State in all it's red-ness.

Night two setting up camp north of midnight went twice as fast as our first go back in Donner State Park. (Go us!)
A mid morning bike ride out to the Inferno Cone was a welcome change to a day and half in the car.

The free internet from Albertson's is really slow, we will update again as soon as possible...

The Route

There and Back Again

There and Back Again (The Hobbit) is to me one of the great adventure stories. Adventure can find you where you are or you can go and seek it.

The Unexpected Party
Tolkien readers will recognize the title as the first chapter of The Hobbit (There and Back Again) and we meant it in that way. Baggins unexpectedly becomes the central player in a epic journey that changes the course of history. The unexpected party then is a not just a house party but a traveling one.

We also meant to play on the title, as Tolkien did, that a party (a house party) is always around the corner. That traveling and hosting teach similar life lessons; hospitality, flexibility, openness, honesty, care, commitment, etc.

In the book, Baggins plays host to unexpected guests in his home on very short notice. Being a Hobbit  (Tolkien's take on British subculture in my view)  however, he didn't have the option of refusing them. Instead he opened his door, his pantry and his life...never to be the same again.

So, in the spirit of great adventure and life changing experience we set out on our little trip, not really expecting more than a good time but open to and unexpected party and the adventure it may bring....
